Channel Islands Funds Forum
A Sharper Focus

About the conference

The Channel Islands Funds Forum is the largest annual funds event in Guernsey and Jersey – and this year it will be bigger than ever.

Building on the success of 2016’s conference, we have expanded this year’s event so that delegates will be able to attend:
•  A pre-event seminar presented by Preqin
•  The main conference sessions
•  Post-event networking drinks

As always, the event will bring together leading funds practitioners from both islands and beyond, to hear expert opinion on the funds industry both locally and globally.

The event is organised by BL Events in partnership with PwC. It is sponsored by Appleby, JTC Fund Services and Optimus Group, and supported by Altair, Puritas and Rossborough Professional Risks.

Delegates can also choose to attend the Preqin seminar on its own, should they not be able to attend the main conference.

Preqin Pre-Event Seminar

We are delighted to host this pre-event seminar in association with Preqin, the alternative assets industry’s leading source of data and intelligence.

Using their own data, which encompasses over 25,000 alternative asset managers and institutional investors, Preqin will look at the big picture in the alternative assets industry today, and examine the whats and whys that are driving innovation and change in 2017. How has the alternative assets industry grown and evolved since the financial crisis? Which products are getting the attention of institutional investors in 2017 and where is that money going to? How are fund managers and investors positioning themselves for the, as yet unclear, impacts of Brexit? Where do the Channel Islands sit in the alternative assets landscape and how have they fared as the alternative asset sector has grown? Preqin’s presentation will cover the entire alternative asset universe encompassing both closed- and open-ended funds.

•  AMY BENSTED, Head of Hedge Funds, Preqin
•  TOM CARR, Head of Real Assets Products, Preqin

Registration and refreshments for this seminar will start at 9am.
Anyone booking a delegate place for the main conference will be able to attend this seminar.
Places can also be booked separately at a cost of £40 per delegate.

Main Conference Schedule

Here are the sessions for the main conference. Speakers will be added as soon as they are confirmed.

11:00 WELCOME NICK KIRBY, Editor-in-Chief, BL magazine
A round up of what has happened in Guernsey and Jersey’s funds industries in the last 12 months. How have the funds regimes moved on, what new business has come into the islands, and what is happening with listings? How do the figures stand up and how are the islands keeping up with their competitors and benchmarks?
Director of Policy, Jersey Financial Services Commission

CEO, The International Stock Exchange

Partner, Mourant Ozannes, Jersey

The volatile geo-political landscape is creating uncertainty around the world. With Article 50 set to be triggered and a febrile atmosphere across Europe, what is the picture close to home. And what of the chaos caused by the Trump administration and issues further afield in the Middle East and Russia? How could all this political turmoil affect funds in the Channel Islands? And, will, the UK assume low-tax status and become their main competitor?
A panel of experts from outside the Channel Islands give their take on the funds industries in Guernsey and Jersey. What do they perceive are the islands’ strengths and weaknesses, and how does the competition compare?
Partner, Kirkland & Ellis, London
13:15 LUNCH
Following on from the 12:30 session, Channel Islands practitioners respond to the points raised by the previous panel. Expect fireworks!
Tax transparency, the BEPS agenda, and ever more investor and regulatory reporting all heighten the potential range of tax risks for funds, investors and asset managers. This session will provide an update on how these developments will impact the funds industry in the Channel Islands.
ROBERT MELLOR, Tax Partner, PwC, London
15:30 BREAK
An examination of where the funds industry will be gaining business from in the coming year. Where will the fund raising be happening and where will the projects be taking place. And will certain types of project, such as infrastructure and healthcare, be more prevalent. Are we likely to see a geographic shift?
What are the biggest challenges and opportunities in the coming year? What must the islands do in order to move forward? Will it require further product innovation/changes to regimes? Or is broader innovation required?
NIAMH LALOR, Partner, Ogier
17:25 CLOSING REMARKS NICK KIRBY, Editor-in-Chief, BL magazine
